The “Behaviour analysis algorithms for Emotional and psychological WELLness of seniors (BE-WELL) project has been launched in March 2020 under the “RESTART 2016 – 2020” program funded by the Research Promotion Foundation of Cyprus, focuses on the detection of the emotional journey of the elderly with the development of a proof of concept system, that can reach into the hands of caregivers who never had access to that information before.
The BE-WELL project aims to deliver an intelligent suite of algorithms, focusing on monitoring the emotional and physical wellness of the elderly through behavior analysis. BE-WELL will deliver actionable insights and real-time alerts to the family, home care provider, care facility/assisted living staff, or medical agent for early intervention and necessary measures.
For decades, digital tools and wearables have been used in elderly care where the focus was mostly on physiological data was monitored. BE-WELL focuses on emotion recognition while taking into account the user's daily habits (Activities of Daily Living) and health records. Using affective computing with multi-modal approaches and gathering physiological data and movements, the system will effectively target elderly with mobility limitations (immobilisation and limited/reduced mobility), through separate predictive algorithms in order to monitor emotional wellness (and negative moods) as well as physiological body signals.
